no error reported when trying to convert this entire directory.

Hi Pete,

    After I changed the shell script to not suppress error
messages, I figured out that USER2IDD did not have permission 
to create the ASCII directory.  A quick call to Dave Wallis 
fixed that.  I successfully converted one file.  The directory 
was owned by vw5, so I believe what happened is that the user 
did not create the data directory but instead allowed saveData 
to do it.  Thanks for looking at it.

Tim Mooney suggests setting permissions on the saveData directory parent to: a+w g+s (writable by all, group ownership is inherited from the parent directory)

This will solve the vw5 ownership problem

However, the software should report an appropriate error to the user.
